Lever Foundation works to create a more sustainable food supply chain in Asia and beyond.

Why we do it

Asia is key

When it comes to improving food sustainability—lowering greenhouse gas emissions, conserving land and water, reducing the cruelty and public health risks of industrial animal farming, or increasing health and nutrition—Asia is the most important region in the world for creating positive change.

Data from the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization shows:

GHG Emissions

Animal protein production already accounts for nearly one quarter of global greenhouse emissions, and a significantly higher percentage of emissions in many Asian countries.

Protein Consumption Growth

Thanks to its large population and GDP growth, Asia's animal protein consumption has been on a rapid rise. It already surpasses that of the E.U. and U.S. combined, and it accounts for half of global growth in demand.

Farm Animals

East Asia alone is now home to 2 out of every 3 farm animals alive today. Most are confined in intensive industrial farms which also cause severe suffering and increase public health and disease risk.

Our approach

is simple

Lever Foundation is a U.S. 501(c)3 public charity that carries out programs to create a more sustainable food supply chain in Asia and beyond. Lever's team of thirty across Greater China, Indonesia, the Philippines, Thailand, Korea, Malaysia and Singapore, along with several colleagues in Europe and the U.S., focus on two program areas that deliver major impact across key food sustainability metrics (GHG emissions, resource conservation, animal suffering, and public health) with each dollar spent.
